To create the reaction mixture that was used throughout this experiment, 0.051 g of 6-thiopurine (6TP), 0.76 g of 9-(chloromethyl)anthracene (9A), 20 ml acetonitrile, a 50ml round bottom flask, and a 250 ml beaker were needed. First, 0.051 g of 6-thiopurine and 0.76 g of 9-(chloromethyl)anthracene were added to the 50 ml round bottom flask. Next, 20 ml of acetonitrile was also added to the 50 ml round bottom flask. The solution was then refluxed (a setup in which a tube is attached with cold water running along the outside and the solvent is evaporated and condensed back in, all of which takes place over a hot water bath) at 75°C for 45 minutes.
